On February 25, 2011 Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health hosted the Caregiver Business Summit, which was targeted at HR professionals and business leaders. We discussed a costly business issue: the financial impact on organizations due to employees who are caregivers. Caregivers to children, caregivers to the elderly, and, for the “sandwich generation,” caregivers to both simultaneously. While the emphasis was on Alzheimer’s, the content suggested much broader application.

There was an impressive array of speakers, including keynotes:

  • Representative Edward Markey, Massachusetts 7th Congressional District. Serving since 1976 and the Dean of both the MA and N.E.House Delegations. Representative Markey is the founder and co-chair of the Congressional Task Force on Alzheimer’s
  • Chris Matthews, Host of MSNBC’s Hardball and The Chris Matthews Show

Did You Know?
  • The annual cost to businesses for employees of all ages who are caregivers is more than $17 billion.
  • Losses include absenteeism, workday interruptions and employee turnover.
  • There are more than 250,000 caregivers in Nevada, the majority of whom are currently employed.
