Support groups offer a welcoming place to meet others in similar circumstances and serve as an additional resource for coping with the significant impact of caregiving. Under the guidance of a trained facilitator, participants share experiences, learn new information, discuss coping strategies and encourage each other.

Participants benefit from the awareness that they are not alone, learning that other caregivers often share similar experiences and emotions. Those participating in a support group report that doing so provides an opportunity to:

  • Meet others with first-hand experience in caregiving
  • Learn about formal and informal caregiving resources
  • Gain an increased sense of support and understanding from their peers
  • Serve as an outlet for mutual learning
  • Offer a safe environment to discuss challenging issues
  • Increase their confidence as a caregiver

The group environment offers a safe, accepting place where a wide range of feelings can be expressed and participants can benefit from the collective wisdom toward their resolution.

At the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, the Caregiver Support Project offers a weekly support group for family caregivers of all ages, who care for individuals with all forms of dementia. The group is facilitated by Dr. Donna Munic and meets at the Center’s building in Las Vegas on Wednesdays from 1:00 – 2:30 PM. This project is funded through a grant from the Nevada Aging and Disabilities Services Division. There is no charge to participate. Keep Memory Alive also recognizes groups that are sponsored by national organizations and community groups who offer services for caregivers.
