Keep Memory Alive hosts think tanks and participates in public policy initiatives, fostering collaboration across research networks. Here are a few key initiatives:

  • Federal H.O.P.E. ACT legislation Introduced (April 7, 2011): The introduction of the Health Outcomes, Planning, and Education (HOPE) for Alzheimer's Act (S. 738/H.R. 1386), which seeks to improve detection and diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias and provide access to information and support for newly diagnosed individuals and their families. Sens. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) and Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Reps. Edward Markey (D-Mass.) and Christopher Smith (R-N.J.) are the lead co-sponsors of this legislation.

  • Congressman Edward Markey addresses employers at Keep Memory Alive’s 2011 Caregiver Business Summit
Introduction of Nevada Senate Bill 245 (March 28, 2011): Creates the Statewide Alert System for the Safe Return of Missing Older Persons. The introduced legislation is comparable to what exists in others states as the “Silver Alert System,” which uses a wide array of media outlets—such as commercial radio stations, television stations, and cable TV—to broadcast information about missing persons. Approximately 6 in 10 dementia victims will wander at least once. If not found within 24 hours, up to half of wandering seniors with dementia suffer serious injury or death.
  • Keep Memory Alive Inaugural Caregiver Business Summit (February 25, 2011): U.S. Congressman Edward Markey, author of legislation surrounding Alzheimer’s, and MSNBC personality Chris Matthews spoke at Keep Memory Alive’s Caregiver Business Summit. Click here to see the video.
  • National Alzheimer’s Project Act (NAPA) signed into law by President Obama (January 4th, 2011): NAPA creates for the first time a coordinated national strategy to confront Alzheimer’s and will provide a critical framework within the government to better deploy federal resources to all Americans in an efficient and impactful manner. NAPA will play a lead role in establishing a national strategic plan to manage and solve the Alzheimer’s disease epidemic.
  • Alzheimer’s Breakthrough Act of 2009 (July 22, 2009): Presented to the 111th Congress.
  • National Alzheimer’s Strategic Plan (March 2009): Presented to the 111th Congress and the Obama administration.
